Ya alejado del n\u00facleo de los postulados freudianos, el suizo se ve obligado a comentar el impacto que el psicoan\u00e1lisis hab\u00eda tenido en su \u00e9poca. Inicia su trabajo diciendo: \u201cEs siempre empresa delicada y peligrosa pretender observar desde su perspectiva hist\u00f3rica a un ser todav\u00eda vivo. Pero cuando ha realizado una obra vital y creado un sistema completo de ideas, como ocurre en el caso de Freud, es m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil comprender y seguir su significaci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica. Su teor\u00eda, familiar en l\u00edneas generales a todo lector culto, no tiene ramificaciones inabarcables, ni incluye tampoco elementos extra\u00f1os, cuyos or\u00edgenes hayan de buscarse en otras esferas del saber y, finalmente, descansa sobre unos principios perfectamente transparentes que dominan y penetran todo el pensamiento de Freud\u201d (Jung,1991 [1934], p. 99). Esta descripci\u00f3n reconoce al psicoan\u00e1lisis como uno de los sistemas de pensamiento m\u00e1s influyentes en el mundo occidental a lo largo del siglo XX. Nacido como una teor\u00eda de la mente y al mismo tiempo como una pr\u00e1ctica cl\u00ednica, el psicoan\u00e1lisis r\u00e1pidamente sobrepas\u00f3 sus l\u00edmites iniciales y se estableci\u00f3, en palabras del poeta W. H.
